May 1.... May Day !

From the time I was a little girl
            ( over a 1/2 century ago ) I have celebrated May Day.   At school, there was a May Pole on the play ground.  

I am not sure when the "may basket to the door" started for us, but, I know my children and my grand children have participated.


Here is a little  "May Days" past...

And one year, an extra surprise for Lady Z

And now 2020... 

Starting with the same green cones.... candy kisses in the bottom 

Then lilacs... in perfect bloom and fragrance

 And we are ready...  two little cuties next door are my helpers..

To the door, ring the bell, run and hide.  Watch the surprise on neighbors faces.    And this year, neighbors were actually home. 

And  in the end,  little one said she wanted to  leave one at my door

And she did...

May 1  is May Day

and that means.. flowers at the door

For many years I have found a tulip on my front porch on May Day.
The Girls Scouts have kept it a secret, until  this year, I found out

And for many years we have taken flowers to the door of neighbors...like these..
 this year, I could not find any little helpers, so after dark, hubby helped me. Did not ring any doorbells  ( it was about 10:00 p.m. by the time our Bible Study dispersed ) 
The lilacs were in perfect bloom and we always put a few candy treats in the bottom

In case you forgot, or did not know,  on May 1, you take a basket of flowers to your neighbors door, ring the bell and run and hide.  It is especially fun for the very young.  They can usually be seen hiding behind a bush, but the neighbor just smiles and looks around.

If you did not do it this year, get ready for next year, only 359 days away.  Plenty of time to plan.  Lilacs are in full bloom. 
And, I think the tradition is coming back.

Flowers at your door? or Happy May Day !

Yes, it is an old custom, but not forgotten. There were at least three doors in our neighborhood with baskets - I know, because I put them there. Usually, my little friend Emily across the street, is my helper. But this year, she was out of town. I am not very creative, so this year, they were just colored paper cones with a little candy in the bottom and a few flowers on top. Our garden is kind of bare this year after major yard work. But a few lilac, a little lily of the valley and three white camellias and I was good to go. Off to the usual homes where they would not be shocked to find flowers on their door knob. And yes, I rang the doorbell and ran. I ran to Bellevue Square where I wished a couple employees and friends "Happy May Day". Only one person seem to understand. Tina, at N.B. said her girls were at home making baskets for their neighbors. Later I read on facebook that Heather Tonn got a basket at her door. So how about You? Did you?
